Colombian Traditional Music and its Basic Structures: Afro- Colombian Music (Part I)

Este estudio tiene como principal objetivo presentar los elementos básicos de las estructuras de la música tradicional colombiana de origen africano y está dividido en dos secciones. En la primera se hace un recuento histórico de su tradición investigativa y de las premisas metodológicas y analíticas del estudio. En la segunda se estudian directamente estas estructuras musicales en el contexto colombiano y afrolatinoamericano. Constituye, además, parte de un trabajo más amplio que incluirá finalmente un análisis de las estructuras de otros estilos musicales colombianos tal como se documentaron durante el último cuarto del siglo XX.

The main objective of this article is to introduce the basic
elements of the musical structures of traditional Colombian
music of African origin. It is divided in two sections.
The first one is dedicated to a brief historical review of
its research tradition and of the methodological and
analytical framework of the study. In the second one the
musical structures will be discussed in the Colombian
and Afro-Latin American contexts. Moreover, this text
is part of a larger project which eventually will deal with
other Colombian musical styles as documented during
the last quarter of the 20th century.
