There was a time when you could have thought that in the tectonics of the Colombian Andes the folds had the greatest importance, and the faults and, on a grand scale, the greatest fissures, very little. Actually it can be said that the faults have the essential importance, above all in what concerns the Southwest.
This region is made up of a series of grabens and horsts, directed Southwest to Northeast, and by some transversal horsts. The first, numbered from West to East, are the following: Horst of the Coastal Cordillera, Graben of Atrato-Pacific, Horst of the Western Cordillera, Inter-Andean Graben Cauca-Patía, Horst of the Central Cordillera, Graben of the Magdalena, Horst of the Eastern Cordillera and, finally, the Depression of the Eastern Llanos. The transversal horsts are: In the South, the Knot of the Pastos, the "Dintel de Santa Rosa", the "Cuchilla del Tambo ", the "Dintel de Suarez" and, more to the North, the Horst of Marmato.
