POST-PARTUM IN THE CATTLE

El posparto es un periodo crítico del ciclo reproductivo del bovino. Para que se reasuma la función reproductiva después del parto, es necesario que haya involución uterina, cese la inhibición de la función del hipotálamo y la hipófisis para que se restablezcan el patrón de secreción de la hormona luteinizante y la ovulación. En el presente artículo se discuten sucintamente los aspectos más relevantes que influyen en la restauración de la función reproductiva, a saber: el amamantamiento y cercanía del ternero a la madre, presencia del toro en el hato, la nutrición, las reservas energéticas de la madre y el efecto del suministro de algunas hormonas.

The postpartum is a critical period during the reproductive life of a cow. In a general approach, the return to reproductive function after parturition, depends on uterine involution and cessation of the inhibition of hypothalamic and hypophyseal functions. In the present revision, known relevant factors aspects which influence postpartum reproductive physiology, are briefly discussed, including suckling, nutrition and energy status of the cow, contact with the calf and presence of a bull, and the effect of time of the year at parturition, as well as the use of hormonal therapies.
