The purpose of this study was to evaluate the germination, annual survival, and growth of the native forage shrub Caesalpinia palmeri from seeds sown under different conditions of degraded and agricultural lands in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. 30 seeds were sown in each patch: under the following conditions bare soil, bare soil with added pruning branches, under a tree, and bare soil protected with plastic mesh under rainfed conditions, as well as in patches within an agricultural ecosystem with drip irrigation. After one year, the results showed greater germination in bare soil patches protected with mesh with protection (46 % germination, χ²= 15.86, p= 0.0032). One-year survival was higher in the agricultural ecosystem, reaching 70 % (χ²= 9.71, p = 0.0455), followed by 35 % in bare soil protected with mesh and 25 % in the bare soil covered with branches. No annual survival was observed in plants that germinated under a tree or on bare soil. Height and canopy width growth in the agricultural ecosystem had an annual growth greater than exceeded 100 cm (p < 0.0001), whereas while in the degraded ecosystem, with both meshes and branch treatments, height and width growth were less than 17 cm. The establishment of C. palmeri in degraded arid lands in northwestern Mexico is limited by conditions affecting germination, survival, and growth, which are associated with to microclimate, herbivory, and soil moisture.
