Senecio pterophorus DC. is a perennial herbaceous plant native to South America with ornamental potential. However, its water requirements have not been thoroughly studied. The present study aimed to assess the tolerance of four S. pterophorus genotypes to water deficit under a climate change scenario. The evaluated genotypes—original, violeta, grueso, and aserrado— were collected from the Pampean region. They were subjected to two levels of water availability: control at container capacity (C; 40 % substrate moisture) and water deficit (WD; 20 % substrate moisture), using a capillary wick irrigation system. A completely randomized block design with a split-plot arrangement was employed. Statistical analyses were performed using generalized linear mixed models. When changes in shoot biomass under WD were compared with the control, Violeta showed the smallest reduction (-20 %), whereas original, grueso, and aserrado showed reductions of -76 %, -71 %, and -64 %, respectively. Plants subjected to WD reduced their root biomass compared with the control (original -76 %, grueso -64 %, and aserrado -28 %), except for violeta, which increased root biomass (+31 %). The root-to-shoot ratio of grueso was higher than that of the other genotypes, regardless of water availability. Violeta exhibited the greatest reduction in visual quality under water deficit conditions. The grueso genotype is proposed as a promising option for use under low water availability, as it maintains good visual quality, adequate plant size, and a higher root-to-shoot ratio. Furthermore, it could be considered a promising material for breeding programs aimed at promoting the use of ornamental species with low water requirements.
