Objetivo: determinar el comportamiento de la retención dentaria en los pacientes con dientes retenidos e intervenidos quirúrgicamente en el servicio de Cirugía Maxilofacial del Hospital General Docente Ciro Redondo durante el período 1994 a 2010. Materiales y métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo de tipo retrospectivo. El universo de trabajo estuvo constituido por los 2.064 pacientes, de ambos sexos, con dientes retenidos e intervenidos quirúrgicamente en el servicio de Cirugía Maxilofacial del Hospital General Docente Ciro Redondo en el período comprendido entre enero de 1994 a diciembre de 2010. Resultados: se realizaron un total de 3.153 intervenciones quirúrgicas. Hubo un predominio del sexo femenino y de pacientes con piel de color blanco. El grupo etario más afectado fue el de16 a 34 años, con un total de 1.521 pacientes entre hembras y varones (73.8 % de los casos). Discusión: la indicación de tratamiento más frecuente fue la pericoronaritis y la exéresis el tratamiento más utilizado en el 90.5% de los casos.
Objective: To determine the behavior of the dental retention in the patients with impacted teeth and surgically operated in the Maxillofacial Surgical Service at Ciro Redondo General and Educational Hospital during the period between 1994 to 2010. Materials and methods: A descriptive retrospective study. The universe of work was constituted by the 2.064 patients of both sexes surgically operated, for having impacted teeth, in the service and during the period between January of 1994 to December of 2010. Results: A total of 3.153 surgical interventions were performed. There was predominance of the female sex and of white-colored patients. The most affected age group was from 16 to 34 years old with a total of 1.521 patients both females and males constituting the 73,8% of the cases. Discussion: The most frequent indication of treatment was the pericoronaritis and the surgical removal was the treatment most utilized in the 90,5 % of the cases.
