The restructuring of the study of literature in the context of the new humanities features two aspects: 1) the integration of elements of the sciences, particularly the cognitive sciences, which provide literary analysis with depth and intellectual rigor, and 2) the interest of those analyses in making evident the way in which they contribute to knowledge of the human mind. This article contributes to the project by outlining two possible paths. First, it highlights the points at which literary theory could integrate the achievements of cognitive sciences, especially those regarding the contemporary theory of the metaphor, to the analysis of poetry; and secondly, it develops the idea that those achievements make it possible to explain the cognitive and social function of poetry and the way it contributes to the knowledge of the human.
