This article explores the logical limitations of the use of the notion of belief in social research. I identify some theoretical reflections of contemporary anthropology that directly and indirectly question the neutrality and operability of this notion. My epistemological review identifies the implicit association of the notion of belief with understanding, conviction, and consistency leads to a forced search for coherence in ethnographic materials. Instead, I propose that belief imprecisely groups dissimilar human experiences and insist on the heuristic value of distinguishing between conventions, experiences, and analogies. Finally, I conclude that the word belief does not have a solid academic status due to its strong analytical deficiencies.
