In an increasingly globalized world, governments, corporations, and academic institutions promote diversity as a symbol of inclusion. Yet the concept is far from neutral; more than ever, it is deeply politicized. The global rise of far-right movements has turned diversity into a target through which “others” are vilified, while universities—particularly within neoliberal contexts—market it to attract international students. Too often, however, these institutions fail to support the populations they recruit, leaving international students precarious and entangled in local political conflicts. Drawing on autoethnography and critical higher education scholarship, this study examines how political and capitalist forces co-opt institutional inclusion. By bringing personal experience into conversation with broader sociopolitical realities, I argue for a critical reappraisal of diversity as a tool for genuine liberation rather than a marketable asset.
