Tertiary students are known to be at a critical phase of life particularly due to the transitional period into adulthood
with varying challenges, which makes them more susceptible towards mental health problems or reduced psychological well-being. Therefore, the primary aim of this systematic literature review is understanding the determinants of mental health symptoms and psychological well-being that may be beneficial in establishing targeted interventions and support programs. Four different search databases (i.e., Web of Science, SCOPUS, Eric, PubMed) were used to identify the relevant articles between 2013 to 2023. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, screening, and filtering, a total of 208 articles were retained for the final analysis using the PRISMA guidelines. The findings in this review concluded a multitude of individual, social, and environmental factors that influences university students’ mental health symptoms and psychological well-being.
