Animal welfare (AW) refers to the physical and mental state of an animal in relation to its environment, influenced by external factors. The objective of this study was to determine the animal welfare status of sheep farms in the departments of Córdoba and Cesar, Colombia. Direct observations were conducted on 12 farms, assessing the AW status of sheep aged 0 to 4 years during the transition (rainy-to-dry), dry, and rainy seasons. In the department of Córdoba, the transition period revealed a total absence of feeder hygiene, sanitary plans, and animal welfare training. During the dry season, access to water and feed wasmarkedly reduced, while the rainy season was characterized by a higher prevalence of hoof disorders, parasitic infections, and poor body condition. In the department of Cesar, the transition period similarly showed deficiencies in feeders, training, and sanitary planning, along with poor bedding hygiene. The dry season was associated with reduced access to basic resources, and during the rainy season, limitations in feeding, hygiene, infrastructure, and lighting/ventilation persisted. The findings indicate that AW in both departments is critically determined by climatic variability, reflecting a structural vulnerability in the sheep production systems evaluated.
