Objective To evaluate the prevalence of mental symptoms related to generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), depressive symptoms, and sleep disturbances among students from the Faculty of Health Sciences at a higher education institution in Barranquilla (Colombia), during the social isolation enforced as a preventive measure amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 498 students, and the instruments utilized were the GAD-7, PHQ-9, and ISI.
Results Seventy-four percent (74%) of the studied population were women, and the remaining 26% were men. The age range was between 18 and 25 years, with an average of 19 ± 1.86. The prevalence of GAD was 62%, 71% presented depressive symptoms, and 54.4% of the population reported some type of insomnia.
Conclusion Mental health among the studied student population must be a public health priority at both departmental and national levels due to the risk of self-harm, particularly within the context of social isolation or loneliness experienced during a pandemic such as COVID-19.
