La biotecnología ha emergido en las últimas décadas como una de las ciencias con mayor capacidad para transformar sectores clave en América Latina, incluyendo la salud, la agricultura y la industria. En un contexto marcado por grandes desafíos globales —desde la salud pública hasta la seguridad alimentaria—, la biotecnología ofrece soluciones innovadoras adaptadas a las necesidades específicas de la región. Sin embargo, su desarrollo también plantea desafíos únicos en múltiples ejes. En esta editorial, se abordan los principales avances, desafíos y perspectivas de esta disciplina en América Latina, destacando su potencial para generar un impacto académico, económico y social con enfoque sostenible en la región.
Biotechnology has emerged in recent decades as one of the most transformative sciences for crucial sectors in Latin America, including health, agriculture, and industry. Biotechnology offers innovative solutions tailored to the region's specific needs in a context marked by global challenges—ranging from public health crises to food security. However, its development also presents unique challenges across multiple dimensions. This editorial addresses the main advances, challenges, and prospects of this discipline in Latin America, highlighting its potential for generating sustainable academic, economic, and social impact across the region.
