Durante millones de años los procesos naturales se han ajustado para alcanzar un equilibrio dinámico: el agua se evapora para formar nubes que se precipitan como lluvia y llevan agua a los lugares más recónditos del planeta, luego vuelve a evaporarse para continuar su ciclo; así mismo, los seres vivos acumulan materia orgánica durante su crecimiento, la cual retorna al ambiente después de su muerte; de esa forma, todos los procesos naturales logran un balance para mantener el frágil equilibrio.
