La palabra "símbolo" es una de las más polisémicas en el sistema de las ciencias semióticas". La expresión "significado simbólico" es ampliamente utilizada como sinónimo sencillo de lo sígnico. En tales casos, cuando hay presencia de cierta relación de expresión y contenido, y lo que en tal contexto se subraya especialmente: la convencionalidad de esta relación, hablarán los investigadores de símbolos y de funciones simbólicas. Al mismo tiempo, aun Saussure oponía el símbolo a los signos convencionales, destacando en los primeros el elemento icónico. Recordemos que Saussure en relación con esto escribía que la balanza y no el carro puede ser símbolo de la justicia, por cuanto aquella icónicamente contiene la idea del equilibrio.
