Es posible que haya tantos estructuralismos como estructuralistas, y alguien como Piaget se las arregla para encontrar algún espécimen en casi cada disciplina. Sin embargo, acaso sea más prudente caracterizar al estructuralismo, siguiendo a Cassirer, como una "tendencia general del pensamiento",  lo que quizás articula mejor Jakobson cuando escribe que es, "la idea de que cualquier grupo de fenómenos [sea] examinado no como una aglomeración mecánica, sino como un todo estructural y la tarea básica es revelar las leyes internas de este sistema, sean ellas estáticas o de desarrollo" (II,711).
