La filosofía política de Philip Pettit es uno de los mayores intentos contemporáneos por elaborar una completa teoría republicana acerca del buen gobierno. En la base de este republicanismo se encuentran dos supuestos, a los que, por lo demás, ha adherido, de distintas maneras, la tradición republicana en general. Primero, que los seres humanos son capaces de generar civilidad o virtud cívica y, segundo, que los seres humanos son intrínsecamente corruptibles, es decir, dadas ciertas condiciones, ejercerán el poder arbitrariamente. El artículo busca mostrar que ambas afirmaciones no son compatibles y que, en consecuencia, al nivel de supuestos fundamentales, esta teoría republicana del gobierno debe ser repensada.
