This essay, written in the framework of the second session of the interuniversity seminar on public health programs offered in the first half of 2017, initially makes a brief account of the historical development of epidemiology as a fundamental element for understanding the development of thought and causality models. Subsequently, the theoretical foundations that support the identification of causal relationships and the available models and methods of analysis are exposed, providing some examples of their application. Finally, the strengths and limitations of this epidemiological analysis during the identification of causal relationships are presented.
