Stress, anxiety, and depression in social work students from Peru

Objective To report the magnitude of symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression in Social Work Students (SWS) from Peru and the stressors associated with each illness. Moreover, to validate the DASS-21 tool (Spanish version) with a Peruvian SWS sample.

Method Quantitative study that applied the DASS-21 scale to a sample of 152 Peruvian SWS. Sociodemographic data and college stressors over stress, anxiety, and depression were modelled with factorial analysis, multiple regressions, ANOVA, and t-tests. Descriptive statistics were also used. The research started in August 2018 and end in February 2019.

Results The study concludes that 48% of Peruvian SWS suffer from severe or extremely severe symptoms of stress, anxiety, or depression. Female students are the most affected by these illnesses. The DASS-21 Spanish version was validated in a new sample of Peruvian SWS. The profile of the SWS from Peru is reported.

Conclusion Peruvian SWS are suffering symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression at different levels. There are college stressors that increase the symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression in these students.

Objetivo Reportar la magnitud de los síntomas de estrés, ansiedad y depresión en estudiantes de Trabajo Social de Perú y los estresores universitarios asociados con cada una de estas tres enfermedades. Asimismo, validar la herramienta DASS-21, versión en español, en una muestra de estudiantes de trabajo social de Perú.

Método Estudio cuantitativo que usó la herramienta DASS-21 en una muestra de 152 estudiantes de trabajo social del Perú. Modelos que evalúan la relación de datos sociodemográficos y estresores universitarios sobre el estrés, la ansiedad y la depresión fueron evaluados usando análisis factorial, regresiones múltiples y pruebas ANOVA y t-student. También se utilizó estadística descriptiva para analizar los datos. La investigación empezó en agosto 2018 y finalizó en febrero 2019.

Resultados El estudio concluye que el 48% de los estudiantes de Trabajo Social de Perú sufren síntomas severos o extremadamente severos de estrés, ansiedad, o depresión. Las estudiantes mujeres son las más afectadas por estas enfermedades mentales. Existen estresores universitarios relacionados con el estrés, la ansiedad y la depresión, respectivamente. El estudio valido la herramienta DASS-21 en su versión español en una muestra de estudiantes universitarios peruanos. Se reporto el perfil del estudiante de Trabajo Social en el Perú.

Conclusión Los estudiantes de Trabajo Social de Perú sufren síntomas de estrés, ansiedad y depresión en diferentes niveles. Existen estresores universitarios que aumentan las percepciones de estrés, ansiedad y depresión en estos estudiantes.
