In the mid-1960s, Richard Feynman called interference with singular matter particles the only mystery of quantum mechanics because, although this science predicts with high accuracy the interference patterns observed experimentally, it does not explain their phenomenology in detail. To solve the mystery, an alternative reading of the mathematical apparatus of interference is proposed, which starts from the measurement of the patterns by square modulus detectors and synthesizes a new principle of interference in free space, which is applied equally in optics as with singular matter particles: the confinement in spatially structured wells. The measurable and non-measurable aspects of this interference phenomenology are analyzed and its effectiveness and explanatory validity are illustrated in interference experiments with single electrons and singular molecules reported in the scientific literature, thus solving the “only mystery of quantum mechanics” according to Feynman.
