Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi can improve agricultural productivity in low-fertility soils, although their effectiveness depends on the strain and soil conditions. This study evaluated the nutritional response of maize (Zea mays L.) to inoculation with AMF strains in a leached yellowish ferralitic soil from Pinar del Río, Cuba. Four treatments were applied under pot conditions: an uninoculated control and three treatments with the strains INCAM-4 (Glomus cubense), INCAM-8 (Claroideoglomus claroideum), and INCAM-11 (Rhizoglomus irregularis), in a completely randomized design with five replicates. Thirty-five days after germination, morphological (stem height and diameter), physiological (shoot and root biomass), mycorrhizal (colonization and visual density), and nutritional (foliar N, P, and K content) variables were measured. The results showed differences among strains. G. cubense showed the greatest increases compared to the control in height (15.6%), diameter (23.8%), shoot biomass (53.4%), root biomass (54.2%), mycorrhizal colonization (51.6%), and nitrogen (20.5%) and phosphorus (32.5%) content. R. irregularis stood out for its increase (37.9%) in phosphorus uptake, while C. claroideum exhibited the greatest increase in foliar potassium (11.2%), although with less colonization and growth. In conclusion, G. cubense represents a viable and sustainable alternative for low-fertility soils, reducing the need for chemical fertilization. Validation of these results under field conditions is suggested.
