The variability of soil properties is primarily spatial and it should be known to make appropiate use of this resource. In this paper we describe the methods that are used to study this variability, making emphasis on the statistical assumptions that must be met and how to achieve them. Procedures are illustrated with results of several studies conducted in Colombia. The methods used to study the spatial variability in soil are: a nested design, regression analysis and analysis of semivariance, the latter being the most complete and the more applications you have. By calculating the semivariance between separate samples at different distances can model the spatial dependence of soil properties and with the established model can map the spatial distribution of the values of these properties by interpolation unbiased kriging techniques, which to allow a more rational use of soil resources.
