This article presents the simulation and performance analysis of a flat-plate solar collector system for domestic hot water heating
(DHW) applied to Rural low-income housing in Colombia, using the System Advisor Model (SAM) software developed by the U.S.
National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The research is framed within the context of the Just Energy Transition, with the
objective of promoting equitable access to clean technologies in low-income sectors. Using local climate data, residential thermal
demand profiles, and technical specifications of commercially available solar collectors, a series of simulations were performed
to evaluate the system’s energy performance, its capacity to cover DHW demand, and its energy savings potential compared to
conventional heating systems (gas or electricity). The study focused on an ideal municipality obtained through multicriteria analysis.
The results show that flat-plate solar collector systems can cover between xx and xx of the annual hot water demand in affordable
housing, depending on the location and consumption pattern. Key factors influencing system performance are also identified, such
as orientation, collector inclination, and storage tank volume. The article concludes that the implementation of this technology
represents a viable and socially just technical solution that can significantly contribute to reducing domestic energy consumption
and decarbonizing the residential sector in Colombia.
