This paper presents a comparative analysis between two predictive control techniques used to follow current references in power inverters and AC-AC matrix converters. Firstly, the control methods are presented for a conventional grid-tied three-phase inverter. Then, these methods are applied to a 3x3 AC-AC matrix converter. The analyzed predictive control methods are: the finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) and the Deadbeat control. Simulation results are presented in the MATLAB/ Simulink program and the operation of the control strategies for the tracking of sinusoidal and distorted currents is compared. Both control techniques follow the current references, but the finite control set model predictive control is simpler than the other and in addition the results have lower Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) than those found using the Dead-Beat control.
