Distributed Energy Resources (DER) integration in the distribution networks is emerging to satisfy the growing elec- tricity demand. These new Distribution Systems (DS) are knowing as Active Distribution Networks (ADN). Distributed Generation (DG) in DS generates some protection challenges due to changes in magnitude and direction of currents, among other associated problems. Therefore, it is also important to properly integrate DG into the DS through standards and network architectures in addition to developing protection strategies. In this context, this work presents a conceptual design of a protection scheme for ADN, described through the IEC 62559-2 standard and developed using the Smart Grid Architecture Model (SGAM) framework. The IEC 62559-2 standard is used as a guide to specifying the device’s properties and functionalities in charge of ADN protection in the case of a fault. Therefore, through seven steps, it is possible to identify the actors, the exchanged information, the requirements, and the regulations required to describe the communication-based protection scheme. Finally, results have been got by developing the conceptual design through the inter-operability layers proposed in the SGAM framework. The results show the actors involved, the information exchanged, the communication protocols, regulations, and the objectives of the selected protection scheme.
