In this paper is proposed a continuous genetic algorithm for the optimal design of a closed coil helical spring, using as objective function the minimization of the total spring volume and by considering as main variables the wire diameter, mean diameter and number of active coils. Furthermore, are considered the set of constraints the physical and technical considerations related to helical spring with the aim to ensure a reliable and safe design. Different numerical simulations were carried for demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, by using as comparison methods different optimization algorithms employed reported in specialized literature for solving the problem here addressed. Results obtained shown that the CGA achieved the minimum value of volume, being a 1.5\% less that the best technique reported with a computing time of 1s; by demonstrating that proposed methodology obtained the best results in terms of solution quality and processing.
