Protection of active distribution networks (ADN) is a growing research topic due to its importance in ensuring service continuity and reliable and effective fault clearing. Several strategies have been proposed in the last years to improve protective devices performance. This paper presents a review and a comparative analysis of different recent proposed schemes based on distance protection. Besides, the advantages, disadvantages, and inconveniences of each are studied when used in conventional networks or ADN. As a result of this paper, a comparison table is presented, which guides future research related to the application of distance protection in ADN.
