The Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias is pleased to announce the first issue of the journal Agronomia Colombiana for 2016, volume 34, which provides our readers the work of research groups that also publish their progress in international publications, leading to citations for Agronomia Colombiana in well-known bibliographic indexes and databases.

Climate change and variability have caused major changes in the eco-physiology of crops, affecting their production and quality. Due to this fact, along with the aggravating phenomena of "El niño" and "La niña", articles on the ecophysiology and adaptation of species and varieties to these changed growth conditions are welcome for publication in Agronomia Colombiana. Other topics of interest include, for example, those that seek to eradicate poverty and hunger from disadvantaged populations.

The following articles, which deal with research areas that are relevant to Agronomia Colombiana, were included in this issue:

The section on plant breeding, genetic resources and molecular biology contains a study that evaluated the genetic structure of a cape gooseberry germplasm (Physalis peruviana), looking for an association between microsatellites and morpho-agronomic traits.

The propagation and tissue culture section has a study that determined the response in the germination of sugar apple seeds (Annona squamosa) from two production zones with different levels of gibberellic acid.

A study on the mechanisms of adaptation to deficit irrigation in the rapid growth stage of pear fruits (Pyrus communis), Triunfo de Viena variety, was included in the section on crop physiology.

Also, the postharvest technology and physiology section contains an article that describes the fruit quality of blueberry for the Sharpblue and Biloxi cultivars under high altitudinal tropic conditions.

On the other hand, the Crop protection section groups together different studies, such as a determination of biotypes in Bemisia tobaco and Trialeurodes vaporariorum in tomato crops in Cundinamarca (Colombia); a genome characterization of a variant of the Potato virus S (PVS), which is prevalent in potato crops in Colombia; the frequencies and densities of parasitic nematodes in banana crops in Ecuador; and an evaluation of different oil palm materials (Elaeis guineensis and Elaeis oleifera × Elaeis guineensis interspecific hybrid) under field onditions with high pressure from bud rot disease.

The topics included in the Soil, fertilizer and water management section deal with changes in nitrite reducing communities in rice-cultivated soils and with degradation and adsorption of the pesticides carbofuran and oxacillin in agricultural soil.

The Biometrics and experiment design section has a study on the benefits of Bayesian and non-parametric estimators when quantifying the amount of weed species in a crop of chrysanthemum.

The section on Economics and rural development contains research on the methodology for valuing non-monetary ecosystem services in different indigenous communities of the Colombian amazon.

This selection of articles demonstrates the amount of research being carried out in different areas of tropical agronomy that was conducted to enrich the knowledge of different research groups.
