National identity, common civic creed and religious conflict in Latin America

The social cohesion of many societies may depend, among other factors, on the affirmation of a common civic creed. In this regard, one of the most relevant questions is why some societies have succeeded in building a sense of national identity associated with civic values, while other societies have not. To answer this question, I propose a heuristic model of the nation as family and postulate that several of the mechanisms that help explain national identity formation are similar to the mechanisms that contribute to explain personal identity formation. Based on this model, I show that the church-state conflict has been decisive in the formation of national identity in Latin America and present evidence from four countries about the effect of this conflict on the levels observed support for democracy, obedience to the law, spread of violence and corruption, as manifestations of quite different configurations of national identity.
Es posible que la cohesión social de muchas sociedades dependa, entre otros factores, de la afirmación de un credo cívico común. En este sentido, una de las preguntas más relevantes es por qué algunas sociedades han logrado construir un sentido de identidad nacional asociado a valores cívicos, mientras que otras no. Para responder a esta pregunta, propongo un modelo heurístico de la nación como familia y postulo que varios de los mecanismos que ayudan a explicar la formación de la identidad nacional son similares a los mecanismos que contribuyen a explicar la formación de la identidad personal. Con base en este modelo, muestro que el conflicto Iglesia-Estado ha sido decisivo en la formación de la identidad nacional en América Latina y presento evidencia de cuatro países sobre el efecto de este conflicto en los niveles observados de apoyo a la democracia, obediencia a la ley, propagación de la violencia y corrupción, como manifestaciones de configuraciones muy diferentes de identidad nacional.
