Author Guidelines

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

The journal Avances en Enfermería, of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, is published thrice a year and receives articles written in Spanish, Portuguese and English. When sending articles to publication, please consider the following features about the process:

ARTICLES TYPES TO PUBLICATION (ACCORDING TO COLCIENCIAS)

1. Scientific and technological research article. Original manuscript that presents in detail the original results of research projects. The structure generally used contains four important sections: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion. Minimum of bibliographic references required: 25.

2. Reflection article. Document that presents research results from the author’s analytic, interpretative or critical perspective on a specific subject, resorting to original sources.  Minimum of bibliographic references required: 25.

3. Literature review article. Document that results from investigation in which the results of published or unpublished investigations are analyzed, systematized and integrated on a field of science or technology in order to report on advancement and development trends. Its main characteristic is to present a careful bibliographic review of at least 60 references.

Other contributions not derived from researches

1. Editorial. Document written by the Chief  Editor, an Associated Editor, a member of the Editorial Committee or a guest researcher, about orientations in the subject domain of the journal.

2. Reflection document not derived from investigation. Manuscript like essay not resulting from a research. It applies interpretative analytic perspective or critics of the author on a specific topic based on original sources. Minimum of bibliographic references required: 25.

3. Case report (Nursing situations). Document that presents the results of a study regarding a particular situation in order to show technical and methodological experiences considered in a specific case. It includes a commented systematic review of the literature on analogue cases. Minimum of bibliographic references required: 15.

ARTICLES SELECTION CRITERIA

The material submitted to Editorial Committee should meet the following criteria:

1. Clear and precise writing: The document’s wording should provide coherence on the contents and clarity to readers.

2. Originality: The document must be original, that is to say: it must be produced directly by the author, it should not be an imitation of other documents.

3. Objectivity and validity: The statements should be based on valid data and information.

4. Importance and contribution to knowledge: The document makes interesting contributions to the state of art of the object of the study.

INFORMATION OF AUTHORS

Manuscripts must be summitted only through OJS system (Open Jornal System): https://revistas.unal.edu.co/index.php/avenferm/about/submissions#onlineSubmissions

Authors must send articles forward them accompanied with a letter indicating their address and updated electronic mail. If the article has several authors, each author’s contribution should be identified. In case of investigation reports, the main researcher shall assume the responsibility over the integrity and reliability of the collected data. If the article was produced by a group, one or more researches should be designated to assume the responsibility on behalf of the group. In this case, the other members are not perceived as authors, and they shall be listed on the acknowledgement list. When submitting an article to the Editorial Committee, its author accepts that:

• In no case shall he/she receive any payment for the inclusion of the article in the publication.
• He/she can not submit the same article to the consideration of other publications’ Editorial Committee until he/she obtains an answer in writing on the decision made regarding acceptance or rejection of his/her article.

• In case of publication, his/her article becomes permanent property of the Facultad de Enfermería de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia and cannot be published in any other media without written permission from its autor and the University.

General guidelines for structure and submit­ting original articles (IMRAD format)

Cover

Title: title must be visible, accurate, include no more than 80 characters, and translated from native lenguage into English, Spanish and Portuguese. Within the text it should NOT described the presentation of author/s, but it should included in a separate file and consist of: full names, educational background, current position and work institution he/she/they is/are part of, updated email address to contact him/her/them, city and country.

Abstract: manuscript will include abstract in Spanish, English and Portuguese; it should have no more 250 words wich should capture the article’s objective, key points and conclusions of research. In original articles, abstract structure must present the Purpose, Methodology,, Results and Conclusions. For review articles, reflections, translations, the abstract should include purpose, summary and conclusion.

Key words (or descriptors): manuscript must include from 3 to 5 descriptors or key words in Spanish, English and Portuguese, and they must macth up with DeCS (BIREME). Website at: http://decs.bvs.br/E/homepagee.htm

Note: Document does not mention any comercial names of drugs, equipment or material, unless it is strictly necessary.

Grants and subsidies

If the writting is a result of a research work it should include the name of the original research. For the case of sponsored research that have been sponsored or funded by any institution, manuscript should have a final section in which the sponsor is mentioned.

Body text

1. Introduction: In this section authors should include the objective or purpose of the research and logical argument.

2. Materials and Methods: It includes the type of study, phenomenon studied, process of selection of the study population specifying time and place as well instruments and methods of analysis used. If it is applicable, the ethical aspects covered in the study and approval of corresponding Ethics Committee must be included.

3. Results: Results should be logically organized, with guideline of purpose and answers of research question. They must contain data and their corresponding analysis. In case tables, charts, graphs and images are used, they must be numbered following the order they were quoted in the text. The titles should be brief and clear. In addition, source of figures, graphs charts, images, sketchs, line drawings, maps, photographs information should be presented on the file program used to create them (Excel, Word, Power Point, Paint, etc.).

4. Discussion: In this section new and main considerations from research will be highlighted, along with the conclusions that be arised from them. It should point out the authors’ interpretations and explanations related to their original hypotheses and studied literature sources, which must be consistent with research. It may include the implications for clinical practice and recommendations for future investigations.

According to the requirements of indexing in respect of validity period and quality of the bibliography, in reference list a 20% of the so-called “Grey Literature” will be accepted only (books, book chapters, master/doctoral theses, dissertations, reports, guides, manuals, statistics, laws, self-citations, citations from other citations, etc.), in other words, all of the references that do not come from research/original articles published in indexed journals. It is also necessary that the references of indexed journals came from articles that they bear a publication date not more than five years; and at least 50% of the included literature must come from international databases.

The manuscript submitted must have the minimum number of references required by the journal, in accordance with section submission (type of article) that it has been included. The Editorial Team will carry out a comprehensive monitoring of those requirements, whose result will determine whether the manuscript continues process, if it requires references adjustments or even if it must be rejected.

Bibliographic references should be numbered consecutively in brackets and in normal size, according to the order of appearance of the citations in the text. Instances of the presentation of documents and corresponding references are presented as follows:

• Journal article: Surname and two initials of the names of autor/s. Title of article. International title abbreviation of the journal. Year;volume(issue):first-last page. When the article has more than six authors, the words et al. shall be written after the sixth author’s name.

•  Books and monographs: Surname and two initials of the names of autor/s. Title of book. Edition. Place of publication (city): Publisher; year of publication.

•  Chapter of book: Surname and two initials of the names of autor/s. Title of the chapter. Word “In”: Director/Coordinator/Editor/Compiler of the book. Title of the book. Edition. Place of publication (city): Publisher; year of publication. First page-last page of the chapter.

•  Presentations: Surname and two initials of the names of autor/s of the paper. Title of the paper. Word “In”: official title of the congress, symposium, or seminar. Place of publication (city): publisher; year. First page-last page of the paper.

•  Online journal article: Surname and two initials of the names of autor/s of the article. Title of the article. International title abbreviation of the journal. Year;volume(issue):first page-last page. (URL/DOI)

•  Book or monograph online: Surname and two initials of the names of autor/s. Title. Edition. Place of publication (city): publisher; year of publication (date of last update). (URL/DOI)

•  Audio-visual material: Surname and two initials of the names of the authors. Title (CD-ROM, DVD, disk as the case may be). Edition. Place of publication (city): Publisher; year of publication.

•  Legal documents: Full name of the country. Name of  emission law institution. Title of law, ordinance, oficial journal name/number and date of publication.

•  Master-doctoral thesis: Surname and two initials of the names of autor/s. Title of thesis. Place of publication (city): publisher; year of publication.

•  Unpublished material: It refers articles already approved but still not published. The format is: Surname and two initials of the names of the authors. Title. Name of publication. “In press”. Date.
