Los desarrollos tecnológicos ya no son solamente un ejercicio académico, sino instrumentos indispensables para que una sociedad sobreviva económica y culturalmente. Los avances que se prevén en la Biotecnología durante las próximas décadas requerirán de una EDUCACIÓN y entrenamientos específicos en los individuos para que sean capaces de adquirir las habilidades conceptuales, de manejar la Biotecnología y las destrezas adecuadas. La aplicación de estas tecnologías en la búsqueda de soluciones a problemas como: enfermedades infecciosas y crónicas, deterioro del medio ambiente, mejoramiento de especies animales y vegetales, la calidad de los alimentos y el incremento de la producción industrial hacen imperioso que el sistema educativo oriente la educación hacia la producción de proyectos que estimulen el pensamiento investigativo y reflexivo para una efectiva apropiación del conocimiento. Por ejemplo, los desarrollos para obtener un aumento en la productividad agrícola implican que los individuos conozcan las limitaciones biológicas del cultivo y el grado de consanguinidad para disminuir la susceptibilidad de los cultivos, a plagas y enfermedades (Taylor y Francis, 1993).
