Analysis of biodiversity is essential for understanding the functionality and balance of agroecosystems. This study was conducted in the high Andean zone of the San Felipe village in the municipality of Pasto, Nariño, with the aim of characterizing living fences and the associated avifauna. For the characterization of living fences, linear transects were used to determine the frequency, abundance, dominance, and importance value index (IVI) of the plant species present. The avifauna evaluation was carried out through observations and the fixed-point count method, establishing four observation points along the living fences, spaced 50 m apart to avoid recounting individuals. As a result, twelve families and 19 species were identified, with the most frequent species in the living fences (LF) being A. jorullensis, A. decurrens, and E. globulus, the latter being the dominant species in the system. In the Importance Value Index (IVI), the most ecologically relevant species were A. jorullensis and A. decurrens. For the living fences, species diversity was acceptable (Shannon index: 2.98), but equitability was low (Simpson index: 0.20). Among the birds, Z. auriculata and Z. capensis were the most abundant, with an avifauna diversity index of 2.70 and low equitability (0.18). Finally, it was found that birds use the tree species in the living fences as a source of food, shelter, and protection from the wind, among other benefits.
