Pulmonary diseases affect both lung tissue and its physiological function. In most cases, available treatments focus primarily on symptomatic management, underscoring the need for innovative therapeutic and modeling strategies. This study presents a rigorous systematic review, employing multiple search equations across various databases, to examine the use of biomaterials in the development of organ-on-chip platforms as potential tools for modeling and treating pulmonary diseases. The properties of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and silicone elastomers are evaluated, with emphasis on their biocompatibility and suitability for microfluidic device fabrication. Finally, an experimental design is proposed to assess the feasibility of these biomaterials in an organ-on-chip model for pulmonary disease research.
