Objective of this call for papers
As a result of the political environment and theoretical debates in Latin America during the 1960s and 1970s, the so-called Dependency Theory emerged as an intellectual and political response to the developmental and functionalist currents and the interpretations of classical Marxism that predominated in the region. This approach sought to understand the particularities of Latin American economic development and its recurrent crises, as well as to propose strategic solutions to advance towards socialist transformation.
The main exponents of this theory, such as André Gunder Frank, Vania Bambirra, Theotonio dos Santos, and Ruy Mauro Marini, developed fundamental concepts such as unequal exchange, the rupture of the capital cycle and the super-exploitation of labor, which contributed to an understanding of the structures of dependence and underdevelopment that characterized the region. This school of thought offered key theoretical tools for analyzing the dynamics of capitalism in Latin America and provided a solid basis for questioning power structures and class relations.
More than half a century after its emergence, Dependency Theory is still relevant to understanding the current socioeconomic challenges of the region. In this context, this call invites us to reflect on the main axes of this theory, reviewing its foundations, historical trajectories, and the debates that have emerged over the years. We seek to explore its capacity to explain contemporary phenomena affecting Latin America, from the impact of capitalist globalization to the recurrent crises of the world economic system.
