Eduardo Pizarro Leongómez se formó en Francia, obtuvo el título de Sociólogo por la Université Paris 8 Vincennes Saint-Denis, Magíster del Instituto de Altos Estudios para el Desarrollo y obtuvo un diploma DEA en el Institut d´Etudes Politiques de Paris. A su regreso a Colombia, fue miembro-fundador y director del Instituto de Estudios Políticos y Relaciones Internacionales (IEPRI) de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Bogotá), siendo un especialista e investigador del sistema de partidos y del conflicto como profesor investigador. Ha sido profesor visitante de Columbia University, University of Notre Dame y Princeton University (Estados Unidos), Université Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris 3 (Francia), Universität Tübingen (Alemania) y Universidad de Salamanca (España).
