El desarrollo de la física-matemática constituye unu revolución intelectual con las más amplias y profundas consecuencias. El deseo de entender el método que ha seguido esta ciencia en su camino de triunfos se remonta por lo menos a los filósofos y a los científicos contemporáneos, a Galileo, Kepler y Newton, e incluye estos, naturalmente.
La física-matemática consiste, por un lado, de una parte formal y abstracta; y por otro, de una parte observacional, o experimental. Los filósofos de que hablé, trataron de caracterizar esta ciencia en cuanto a sus bases epistemológicas y sus métodos; y como es natural, unos (Descartes y Leibniz, por ejemplo) le dieron más importancia a la parte formal, y otros (Locke y Bacon) a la parte observacional. Desde entonces, el esfuerzo por precisar las bases y los métodos de la física no ha cesado. Pero a este proyecto se le han presentado problemas tremendamente difíciles de resolver, y aunque se ha hecho algún avance, todavía queda mucho por entender.
