One hundred years of the empire of rhetoric

El presente artículo muestra cómo durante cien años en Colombia la retórica en tanto sistema textual, articuló desde la capital, Bogotá, la vida política y social.
Se muestran aspectos de ese dispositivo retórico fundado en las postrimerías del siglo XIX por el retórico y político Don Miguel Antonio Caro y cómo durante el siglo XX ese imperio retórico sobrevivió en la escritura, a través del sistema de las bellas letras, los periódicos, los escritores de partido y la academia, adaptando el poder a sus sucesivas transformaciones, en el contexto de las ciudades.

This article shows how rhetoric as a textual system interwove Colombian political and social life from Bogota for one hundred years.
Some aspects of this instrument of rhetoric, first put to use by Colombian rhetorician and politician Miguel Antonio Caro in the twilight of the 19th century, are discussed, as well as the survival of this empire of rhetoric in the system of belles- lettres, the newspapers, party writers and academicians, adapting power through its successive transformations in an urban context.
