Un recorrido de Ayax a Robespierre permite articular el terror con la ausencia de otro. En Ayax, el terror aparece vinculado con el narcisismo tanto en la masacre como en el suicidio; el narcisismo puede así llegar a ser mirada del Otro, de Dios. El discurso de Robespierre, al someter la política a la moral, sostener una dicotomía maniquea, erigir la virtud y el terror (denuncia, vigilancia pública) como resortes de la Revolución, ejerce el terror, pues éste no se disocia allí de la palabra: habla! El régimen libre significa medios terribles para extirpar el despotismo, interrogando así la pretensión de autonomía del individuo respecto a todo amo, a todo dios. El precio de la virtud es el terror.

lf we follow the course from Ajax to Robespierre, we are enabled to connect terror to the absence of the other. In Ajax, terror appears bound up with narcissism both in massacre as well as in suicide; thus, narcissism may become the gaze of the other, of God. Robespierre's discourse, subjecting politics to moral, upholding a manichaen dichotomy, erecting virtue and terror (denunciation, public vigilance) as the prime forces of the Revolution, exerts terror, because it is indissociable from the word: talk! A free state requires terrible means for eradicating despotism, and this puts in doubt the individual's pretence of autonomy with regard to every master, every god. The price of virtue is terror.
