Epidemias, endemias y conglomerados: conceptos básicos

La ocurrencia de la enfermedad en una población se puede describir en términos de las tres variables epidemiológicas básicas de persona, tiempo y lugar. Cuando se describe en función del tiempo se pueden presentar dos situaciones básicas: las endemias y las epidemias. Sin duda alguna el término de epidemia es el más fácil de entender, pues ha sido ampliamente utilizado en la literatura especializada y no especializada para describir episodios en los cuales un gran número de individuos mueren o padecen una enfermedad infecciosa en un lugar específico durante un periodo relativamente corto de tiempo. La historia relata epidemias ocurridas desde tiempos inmemoriales, que han mostrado su infujo sobre procesos sociales y cambios radicales en el pensamiento médico.
