El profesor Alfonso Bonilla Naar (Cartagena 1916 Bogotá 1978) fue el Editor durante muchos años, de la Revista "Medicina y Cirugía", órgano de la Sociedad "José María Lombana Barreneche", a mediados de la pasada centuria. Infatigables estudiosos de nuestra historia médica, en especial de la cirugía y patología tropical, admiraba la figura de Antonio Vargas Reyes (Charalá Santander 1816 Bogotá 1873) a quien consideraba como "el más importante cirujano Latinoamericano del siglo XIX". (Precursores de la cirugía en Colombia, Bogotá 1954). Por esta razón dedicó, en 1973 (centenario de la muerte de Vargas Reyes) una edición especial de "Medicina y Cirugía," y apareció en ésta un facsímil del No 1 de la lanceta (abril 17 de 1852) periódico fundado por Antonio Vargas, que Bonilla Naar pudo encontrar. Desde entonces tuve gran deseo por leer y analizar el primer periódico médico Colombiano. Recientemente pude deleitarme con la lectura de los seis números publicados (Abril a octubre de 1852), y obtener reprografía de algunas partes.
