Estudios histopatológicos de la válvula mitral enferma han demostrado que 42% de los casos coinciden con enfermedad reumática aguda, en el 12% de los casos hay indicios de proceso alergo-infeccioso, en algunas ocasiones el proceso es congénito. En 1954, se analizaron 9 casos de "The Children Memorial Hospital", ocurridos en los 20 años precedentes, siendo importante mencionar que desde 1846, solo se había informado de 34 casos.
