El trabajo tiene por objeto llamar la atención acerca de la importancia del diagnóstico precoz de la atresia del esófago como base indispensable del éxito en su tratamiento quirúrgico. Se revisan someramente los tipos anatómicos de atresia esofágica y se dan detalles acerca de los métodos de diagnóstico, preoperatorio y postoperatorio. Se resumen a continuación en forma autocrítica los 4 casos que constituyen el fundamento del trabajo y se ilustra en detalle el último que fue operado con éxito el día 2 de septiembre de 1956 y se constituye así, por los datos que se han podido obtener el segundo tratado con buen resultado en Colombia. El primero ocurrió 8 meses antes en Barranquilla a cargo del Dr. Antonio Ramírez, cirujano de Medellín. Los cuatro casos que ahora se presentan han sido operados en su totalidad por el Dr. Alfonso Bonilla Naar. El buen resultado del último caso es el fruto de una mayor experiencia en los métodos de diagnóstico, preoperatorio, postoperatorio y técnica quirúrgica.
