celular, cuyos elementos se encuentran profusamente distribuídos en la trama de sostén de diferentes órganos y tejidos; esos elementos gozan de características funcionales que justifican su individualización en un sistema celular especial. Muchos son los trabajos de investigación que han puesto de manifiesto las propiedades de este sistema celular, a pesar de su conocimiento relativamente reciente. Gracias a ellos, sabemos que esos elementos tienen sus representantes, variables naturalmente con las diferentes especies, en toda la escala zoológica, desde los ciclóstomos (lampreas y otros peces vecinos) hasta nuestra especie; y es que si los organisrnos
multicelulares de organización bastante complicada, necesitan de mecanismos biológicos diferenciados para su defensa contra los agentes endógenos y exógenos, es asimismo razonable admitir en los grupos zoológicos inferiores, la existencia de constituyentes mesenquimáticos, que indican "una mayor amplitud para los límites que alcanza la representación del sistema dentro de la filogénesis".
