Durante nuestra permanencia en Ibagué 1938-1939, tuvimos oportunidad de escuchar los relatos, algunas veces fantásticos, que los habitantes de la región hacen del veneno de la "Coya" Latrodectus curacaoensis, arañas que son el terror de la comarca. Intrigados con tales fantasías rogamos al doctor Raúl Oastilla, en ese entonces médico del Ferrocarril Ibagué-Ambalema, nos hiciera llegar algunos ejemplares al Laboratorio. Días después teníamos a nuestra disposición más de veinte arañas. Con esos animales hicimos los primeros ensayos y un criadero. Las arañas puestas en grandes bocales, en cuyos fondos se pone tierra y algunas piedras, se conservan y multiplican fácilmente; por alimentación se les dan pequeños insectos.
