El presente caso es de grande interés en la práctica diaria, en donde se presenta a menudo. La ausencia de motilidad voluntaria, la ausencia de sensibilidad consciente, la abolición de la conciencia; permaneciendo la respiración y la circulación; y funciones como la micción y la defecación etc., y correlaciones funcionales como la calorificación, constituyen los elementos del estado comatoso. Hay que diferenciarlo naturalmente de un estado sincopal, en donde habiendo inconciencia y parálisis, la circulación y la respiración tienden a desaparecer, por lo menos temporalmente; de un estado de obnubilación cerebral y de letarqia, en el que puede existir un cierto grado de motilidad voluntaria, percepción sensorial y posibilidad de contestar con un cierto grado de conciencia cuando se trata de conmover al individuo. Naturalmente de la obnubilación o la letargia se pasará en veces al coma.
