La primera historia clínica se refiere a J. V. C., agricultor de 28 años, natural de Chima (Santander) y que vino al servicio por desórdenes de la marcha y dolores en los miembros inferiores. Hasta hace cinco meses el enfermo se encontraba en excelentes condiciones de salud pero una tarde, mientras se dedicaba a sus habituales labores en el campo, recibió una fuerte lluvia a pesar de la cual siguió trabajando. Esa misma noche al llegar a su casa sintió varios escalofríos, dolor de cabeza y de garganta, quebrantamiento, fiebre, sudores y se presentó un estado hronquial. Al cabo de dos días ésta sintomatología desapareció pero en- su lugar se presentó en la mañana del tercer día un hormigueo en los pies que en el espacio de ocho días y en forma progresiva se extendió hasta la raíz de los miembros inferiores y se acompañó de dolores espontáneos de las piernas, de anestesia plantar y de una gran debilidad muscular de los miembros inferiores que hacía la marcha imposible sin la ayuda de un bastón.
