Sabido es que toda célula es "la organización estructural más sencilla en la cual pueden representarse los fenómenos específicos de la vida" (nacer, crecer, reproducirse y morir) que consta de un protoplasma granuloso, acidófilo, de naturaleza hialina y de un núcleo central refringente, de afinidad básico - cromático. Según la teoría, hoy día más aceptada, es en este núcleo donde se encuentran localizados los factores hereditarios, siendo aquellos filamentos (cromosomas) en los cuales se "hiende la cromatina nuclear en el periodo premonitorio a la fecundación", los portadores inequívocos de los mencionados factores. Encuéntrase un número típico, invariable, de cromosomas para cada especie, (En el hombre 48 y en las gallináceas 4). Son ellos los que constituyen el substratum, la base física de la herencia, los que en el importante proceso de la división reducciones, no se segmentaran, sino que se separaran inteligentemente con el fin de quedar reducidos a la mitad, garantizando de este modo, al futuro hijo, una estructura normal puesto que en dicha formación han intervenido en proporciones cualitativa y cuantitativamente iguales cada uno de los padres.
