Este siglo trae nuevos retos a todas las disciplinas, pero muy especialmente a las ciencias de la salud por el compromiso y la responsabilidad con el individuo, la familia y la salud comunitaria. El aprendizaje, la enseñanza y el ejercicio profesional de la medicina y de las demás áreas de la salud, han experimentado durante los últimos 20 años cambios trascendentales con el desarrollo de la tecnología y el gran avance de los medios de comunicación al punto de exigir a los profesionales de la salud estar permanentemente informados y actualizados, atentos a los cambios científicos y a los nuevos descubrimientos que se realicen a través de la investigación. Esto a su vez requiere de la evaluación cuidadosa de la multitud de información que se publica para asimilar sólo aquella que demuestre rigor científico.
