The present anatomical study corroborates the conclusions reached by cytological study. Separation of Barleria from the Justicieae by Engler and Diels has been justified. Barleria seem to be the most primitive genus of all studied here. Andrographideae and Eujusticieae represent separata lines or evolution, probably arose from a common stock. Adhatoda vasica represents the most advanced characters of secondary xylem in the present study within the Justicieae.
