Los porrones del género Aythya son patos migratorios que anidan en las latitudes boreales altas y pasan el invierno en las zonas templadas y tropicales de ambos hemisferios. Las hembras en particular son algo difíciles de identificar porque son de coloración opaca con pocos rasgos distintivos. Se alimentan de plantas y pequeños animales acuáticos que obtienen buceando desde la superficie, por lo tanto requieren de espejos de agua relativamente amplios.
